Beginning with the BMW i3, drivers will discover a 50 percent increase in range, allowing them to get up to 124 miles on a charge, according to BMW UK. This increased range will allow drivers to go farther without having to stop to recharge the battery on a road trip or make frequent recharge stops during a workweek.
Battery Upgrade Influences Capacity and Driving Distance
Consider the upgraded battery as one of the elements for the increased range in the 2017 BMW i3 model. The higher density battery offers a larger capacity and promotes longer drives. In current i3 BEV models, you’ll find a 22-kWh battery compared to a 33-kWh battery in the 2017 BMW i3 model.
One note of caution however, you won’t be able to replace the battery on your own. Currently, BMW is not advertising a retrofit of the new battery into older EV models.
Performance Characteristics Remain the Same
BMW says that the performance characteristics of the 2017 BMW i3 will be approximately the same as the current model offerings. The existing i3 comes with 170 horsepower, goes from 0 to 60 mph in about seven seconds, and has about a 27 kWh per 100-mile rating.
In the 2017 BMW i3, the battery has an anticipated charge time of 4 1/2 hours when you use a level-two charger. The current battery has a three-hour charge time with a 220-volt, or level-two, outlet.
Exterior Features Complement Battery Longevity
As with earlier i3 models, the 2017 BMW i3 offers several stylish exterior features and benefits. Its dimensions come in at 157 inches long, 70 inches wide, and 62 inches high. Drivers will also find a wheelbase of 101 inches and a turning circle of 32.3 feet.
